CBDDoc FAQ

What is CBDDoc? top
CBDDoc
is Computers by Design's enterprise document management system designed specifically to meet the needs of insurance agencies, brokerages and wholesalers.

CBDDoc allows agencies to attach any type of document to a customer's file regardless of its originating location, application or mail system. Documents are indexed and saved using CBDDoc document-saving technology. Examples of managed documents include scanned images, received faxes, Microsoft Word documents, and e-mail

CBDDoc integrates with more agency management systems than any other document management product.

When was CBDDoc first released? top
CBDDoc was first released and installed on December 19, 1999.  CBDDoc was designed as the replacement product for CBD-Image, CBD's scanning system designed in the early 90's and based on Microsoft SQL server.

What database options are available for CBDDoc users? top
Currently CBDDoc is installed and supported on the following database systems:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005

  • IBM Domino Document Manager

The products are referred to as CBDDoc/SQL and CBDDoc/IBM.

What is the current version of CBDDoc? top
The current version of CBDDoc/SQL is 3.1; the current version of CBDDoc/IBM is 2.9.0.

Is CBDDoc/SQL going to replace CBDDoc/IBM? top
No.  Not in the short term.  There are currently thousands of desktops running CBDDoc/IBM accessing terabytes of information.   CBDDoc/SQL should be viewed as an addition to our product family, not a replacement for an existing product.

What are the functional differences between CBDDoc/SQL and CBDDoc/IBM? top
None at this time.

Is there any difference in costs between CBDDoc/SQL and CBDDoc/IBM? top
Not for the CBDDoc software.  However, each database vendor provides different licensing plans for their products.

Are there any other versions of CBDDoc in the works? top
Yes, CBD is currently under contract to deliver CBDDoc client components for FileNet.  We are also working on Microsoft Sharepoint and Interwoven Worksite solutions.

Why the need for so many different database platforms? top
Many agencies, brokerages and banks already have an existing infrastructure in place but still require the rich agency management system integration and workflow that CBDDoc provides, for these organizations the CBDDoc client can fit seamlessly into their document management/content management strategy.

Will supporting so many different platforms slow down product development and complicate support? top
No. Version 3.1 and above of CBDDoc client components are database agnostic, meaning that they talk to the database via a webservice.  Support for additional database platforms are delivered via the development of a new database specific webservice.  The version 3.1 client of CBDDoc/SQL is the exact same program as the version 3.1 client of CBDDoc/IBM.  Only the webservice is different.

Why is the current version of CBDDoc/IBM 2.9 and CBDDoc/SQL 3.1? top
Because the CBDDoc/IBM webservice is currently only used for retrieving documents, not saving documents.  Once we add bi-directional (read and write) support to the CBDDoc/IBM webservice, the 3.1 client can be used.

Does CBDDoc integrate with Active Directory Security? top
Yes, CBDDoc/SQL 3.1 integrates with Active Directory.

Another vendor told me that CBDDoc uses Lotus Notes, is that true? top
Not at all, there has never been a Lotus Notes version of CBDDoc.  The vendor is, at best, confused.
CBD introduced their first SQL server based document management solution in 1994.  And now, CBD is the first vendor to provide true database independence via CBDDoc Webservices.

Another vendor told me that CBDDoc doesn't work with Outlook or Exchange, is that true? top
No, CBDDoc provides seamless integration with the following e-mail systems:

  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Lotus Notes
  • Novell Groupwise
